Day 1 2023: No Gray Whales

0 North Bound 0 South Bound 2.5 hrs

Bright sunny clear sky, calm flat ocean, 64 degrees, slight breeze after a morning of strong gusty Santa Anna winds. No gray whales sightings despite perfect viewing conditions. No sea lions in sea lion cove. Two to three juvenile sea lions barking and taking turns as king of the hill at the top of SeaLion Rock. The new stairs are open to Big Dume Cove but connecting walking path to Coreopsis trail is still under construction after heavy storm erosion and maintenance to trails. The Giant Coreopsis plants are just starting to bloom with ~20% full bloom in some areas. The plants are lush and green with multiple buds.
