A friend shared a photo with me today via text, showing another dead gray whale that washed up earlier this week in Oxnard. His sister had sent it to him, who lives nearby. I looked in the papers and found this article; Gray whale carcass washes ashore in Oxnard amid rising deaths of the sea mammals in Ventura County Star newspaper on May 8th,2019.
According to the article this is the 31st whale washed up dead. It was reported first on Saturday May 4th and may have been there longer. The whale was approximately 30 ft, most likely a juvenile, malnourished and emaciated. A necropsy will be done according, to Justin Viezbicke, the California stranding coordinator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The whale was said to be removed from the beach on Tuesday May 7th.
