Warm 73° Water 60° light wind 5-7 mph with large 5-6 ft swells bringing surfers out in large numbers up and down the coast.
National Weather Service Advisory issued a Beach Hazards Statement through 4 pm February 3rd. Increased risk of ocean drowning. Rip currents can pull swimmers out to sea. Waves can wash people and pets off beaches and rocks. Small boats can capsize near shore.
No Gray Whales were sighted despite clear views and calm flat seas, glassy at times with sparkles in the sun line.
The Full Moon and storms in the Southern Pacific Ocean generate long period waves that travel up and wrap around the coast of Malibu. Creating West and West South West (WSW) swells instead of the more typical North West North (NWN) or South West South (SWS) in the area, These W/WSW swells bring exciting big wave surfing to West Facing beaches like Westward and exposed points get even higher surf.
Surfers were out in force up and down the coast seemingly sitting in wait for the perfect set. They carefully watch the horizon, waiting for half built set ups and finally pick the wave hoping to hit the barrel or tube when the top edge of the wave curls over and creates a water tunnel. Several surfers picked the perfect wave today and many were in the pocket of the barrel which generates the highest velocity and energy to attain a longer ride. On lookers were overheard saying “We wait all year for surf like this”.
