Five Gray Whales in Rough Seas and Gusty Winds

5 North Bound 0 South Bound 7.75 hrs

March 2,2025 Sunday

Sunny 60 degrees with gusty wind 15-25 mph and 30+mph winds throughout the on effort time. Rough choppy seas with white caps to the horizon and harsh sun glare made spotting and tracking whales difficult. Yet, five whales were observed. One thin, with sunken neck areas and protruding pectoral areas. Two were healthy. Two whales spyhopped and traveled together side by side. A third whale joined the pair and they left as a trio. All whales were observed close to shore in the surf zone.

The sun set under a cloudy horizon and lit the clouds on shore up in shades of pinks and red.
