Super Bowl Sunday: Five Gray Whales

February 11th, 2024

5 North Bound 0 South Bound 3.5 hrs *** REW 2

UPDATED: Sunny and warm 66 degrees: calm flat ocean with 20 + mile visibility. All islands including the oil platforms in Ventura/Oxnard areas could be seen.

One pair of juvenile gray whales stopped for several minutes displaying several behaviors including, bubble blasts, headlifts, rolling and spyhopping. Several tall and heart shaped blows were observed as the whales migrated north (west). A solo whale migrated through a mile off shore and a second pair of whales hugged the shore taking time to rest, roll and bubble blast by the little point.

A highness of Royal Terns stood watch as the tide rolled in and out as multiple beach goers were out walking enjoying spring like weather on this beautiful minus tide (Super Bowl )Sunday.

**** REW ( Reliable Eye Witness ) counts are not included in the daily or weekly tally: they are counted and kept separately as a record of the whales observed at Point Dume. The REW counts are extremely helpful and provide important data to keep track of the seasonal and daily changes of the migration. The total gray whale population has declined 46% due to the ongoing UME (Unusual Mortality Event) from 2019-2024.
