Good Friday: Two Gray Whales, Three Humpback Whales and a Solar Pillar

Friday April 7th,2023: Good Friday

Sunny over head, partly cloudy along horizon with high stratus and cirrus cloud layer. High marine layer on and off overcast earlier in the day. Wind down 10-12 mph 62 degrees. Scattered white tipped waves.

One sighting with two adult gray whales, one breached: just once 20 feet off shore just outside the surf line, sadly the photographer did not have a card in the camera to captures such a spontaneous and exciting sight. The pair traveled through quickly not stopping but were re-sighted passing The Sunset Restaurant, 7 minutes later with double heart shaped blows. Drone confirmation it was not a cow/calf pair.

A Sun Pillar was observed tonight! It is a rare atmospheric optical phenomenon only seen under the right conditions. As the sun was setting, it slipped behind high layers of wispy cirrus clouds which are made up of ice crystals and found high in the atmosphere. The tall beam of light is caused when the suns rays are refracted through ice crystals formed in the high clouds. The result is a tall beam of light that shines up into the sky creating a tall tower or pillar of light which can be seen well after sunset and the bright glow of the last rays refracting beautiful shades of red, pink and orange against the bright blue sky.

After sunset a trio of humpback whales were seen near the horizon with a series of seven plus breaches as they traveled further southwest .

A small boat went north then south with neon green (squid fishing) lights shining brightly, glowing along the coast.
