A calm flat ocean with zero to little wind. The sky matching the ocean in color and mood except for the yellow layer of smoggy haze at the horizon. Hazy outlines of the channel islands including Santa Barbara Island which we don’t always see. Large 10-15 ft logs and hundreds of bamboo sticks floated in the surf, more visible today with lack of wave action. The gray whales have many obstacles as they migrate including these huge logs. Gray whales do not use echolocation (biosonar) like dolphins, they rely on visual observations and auditory sounds to navigate the migration. The flat calm ocean today makes getting around these dangers a lot easier for the whales and the swimmers who braved the 55 degree cold water. Beach goers of all ages still enjoying the driftwood and bamboo sticks to create sculptures and or have pretend sword fights.
